With the crises of the current political and economic order deepening every day, Fabians know that new ideas are as important as ever. That’s why we’ve decided to begin publishing a quarterly print and online magazine, dedicated to envisioning a better future and how to get there.
Each edition is going to have a theme, with a portion of the magazine’s content set aside for exploring it in depth. To help us decide what themes we should work with for the first four editions, we want to hear from our members.
You’ll see ten options below. We’ve deliberately kept them fairly broad to allow our writers plenty of scope for interpretation. We invite you to help us out by choosing the one you would most like to see the new magazine focus on in its first year.
And if you're interested in writing on these topics or anything else, please don’t hesitate to pitch an idea to [email protected]

Q: Are there any other themes you would like to see an edition of the Quarterly Review focus on? A: Explore the disconnect between public discourse and private action – e.g nationally we are very anti refugee, migration, asylum seeker but on the ground there are so many supportive and active people and corporations and activities that tell the opposite story. The response to fire was amazing – is it time to start trusting smaller, or at least local and independent institutions and groups to delver in fact what government is failing to do in both theory and practice? Many Australian’s are quietly disengaging from mainstream but increasing involved in local and micro level changes. Interesting.

Q: Are there any other themes you would like to see an edition of the Quarterly Review focus on? A: Actually, several of the others listed were also good – the evolution of change is the only one I can remember.
Two other suggestions:
- dealing with the new, multi-job worklife cycle;
- allowing smaller, including tiny houses, and building houses more effectively – verandahs, 2m earth walls, etc.
