The Eighties: The Decade that Transformed Labor

Sunday - 14 February, 2016 - 12:30 PM

Marconi Room. Sydney Town Hall - Sydney, Australia

Considered a golden era for Labor politics, the eighties heralded never before seen changes including in women's and Aboriginal rights, health care, financial deregulation, the environment, and tariff and industry policy. It was the era of the Hawke government; there was also a Labor government in every state at some time during the decade. But were the eighties really as positive for Labor as we remember them? And what is the legacy of this controversial decade?

Join Frank Bongiorno in conversation with Neal Blewett about this turbulent era in Labor politics.

SPEAKERS:
Frank Bongiorno, ANU Associate Professor of History and author of ‘The Eighties: The Decade That Transformed Australia’
The Hon Dr Neal Blewett AC, Hawke-Keating Government Minister, Labor MP for Bonython (1977-1994)
To attend the event, you will need to be a delegate to Conference or register as an observer - which you can do here.
