The politics of the radical right

The politics of the radical right

Tuesday - 20 August, 2024 - 06:30 PM

Kathleen Syme Library - Carlton, Australia

Why are people in the USA and Europe turning in such large numbers to the radical right? Are there echoes in Australia? Why is discontent with traditional parties not turning people more towards left alternatives? Is it all misinformation and prejudice, or are right parties recognising genuine issues not being addressed by the left? How does this tie in with populism and a loss of faith in western democracy?

After presenting his ideas, Ben will join in a conversation with the Chair of the Victorian Fabians, Jeff McCracken-Hewson. Followed by audience Q&A.

Ben Wellings is Associate Professor in Politics and International Relations, at Monash University, focusing on all aspects of Brexit, contemporary EU politics and history, including English nationalism and Euroscepticism. Award-winning teacher and media commentator, Ben has published extensively on British politics and nationalism and he is regularly sought for expert comment by Australian and British media.
