The long and bloody history of conflict between the Israeli and Palestinian people could not seem further from resolution. And the ICJ has found that there is a plausible case of genocide against Israel. What responsibilities does Australia have in our response to the Gaza conflict? Are we doing enough? What constraints do we face on our ability to do the right thing internationally?

Shahram Akbarzadeh is professor of Middle East and Central Asian politics at Deakin University. His research focus includes transnational linkages and the international relations of the Middle East. He has conducted research on the region for more than two decades and enjoys an international reputation. He is the author of “Middle East Politics and International Relations: Crisis Zone" (Routledge, 2023), which is listed in the top 20 books to read in international relations by Book Authority.

Sarah Schwartz is a human rights lawyer and Executive Officer of the Jewish Council of Australia. She rejects the idea that criticism of Israel's government is antisemitic. Sarah is a Principal Managing Lawyer at the Victorian Aboriginal Legal Service, and a Lecturer at Melbourne University Law School. She was awarded a John Monash Scholarship in 2019 and completed a Master of Laws at Harvard University focused on racism and mass incarceration. She has written for publications including The Age, The Guardian, Crikey, The Conversation, Overland and academic journals.
